| On 7/11/2004, Timothy Horng participated the 2004 Kumon Math Challenge taken place at 29 universities across the United States and Canada. The location in Phoenix is the Arizona State University. The Kumon Math Challenge is an annual summer competition for children in grades 1 through 10. This competition is open to the general public. Children do not have to be Kumon students to enter. Children get to challenge their math skills and vie for scholarships awarded by Kumon. The top 10 students in each grade level will be awarded scholarships ranging from $100 to $1,200 local currency. There are more than 15,000 students participated the math competition this year. Nearly 1,500 students participated in the 2nd grade group contest. The 7-year-old IQ Abacus student, Timothy Horng, entered the 2nd grade group for the competition. He was notified by telephone and mail from Kumon on September 1, 2004. He is also the only second grade winner living in the Phoenix area. All the other winners are in California, New York/New Jersey, Texas, Michigan, and Canada. Timothy Horng has been in the Aabacus Math Program for more than two and half years. He is currently rated Levels 3 to 2 in mental math. We are proud of our student who won such a great honor in an international math event. We are, however, not supprised to hear the news because Timothy has won several trophies from other math competitions such as 2003 Speedy Math and 2004 Math Speedy Math competitions. |
